Cattle Market Notes – Week of May 25, 2012


Cash Cattle:

Cash fed cattle were lower this week. Texas and Kansas live prices were at $121/cwt on Wednesday. In Nebraska, live and dressed prices were called at $121-$123/cwt and $194/cwt, respectively, on Thursday. In Oklahoma City, feeders steers and heifers were called $2-$6/cwt higher; steer calves were also $2-$6/cwt higher; while heifer calves were steady to $2/cwt higher. Cattle Market Notes – Week of May 18, 2012


Cash Cattle:

Cash fed cattle were higher this week. Kansas live prices were at $123/cwt on Friday but trade remained slow. In Nebraska, live and dressed prices were called at $123.50/cwt and $195/cwt, respectively. In Oklahoma City, feeders steers and heifers were called steady to $2/cwt higher. Calves were not called due to limited movement. In Mississippi marktes, feeder steers and heifers were $1-$2/cwt higher. May Cattle on Feed Report


USDA released their monthly Cattle on Feed report this afternoon (May 18).  The report was expected to highlight the dwindling supply of feeder cattle via a much lower April placement number (average pre-report projection of 1.578 million head, a decline of 11.6% compared to last year). The report revealed a much larger decline in placements, down 14.8% versus 2011, which filtered through to a lower than expected on feed number.   Continue reading “May Cattle on Feed Report”

Cattle Market Notes – Week of May 11, 2012


Cash Cattle:

Cash fed cattle were slow to move this week and so no trends were called.  The five-area cash price finished the week at $120.88, mostly steady with last week’s price of $120.16.  In Oklahoma City, both feeders and calves were called $1-$3/cwt higher for all classes.  In Mississippi marktes, feeder steers were $2-$10/cwt higher and feeder heifers were $2-$5/cwt higher.  Slaughter cows were $1-$3/cwt higher and bulls were steady in Mississippi.
