Cattle Market Notes: Week Ending Sep 21, 2012


USDA released their monthly Cattle on Feed report Friday (Sep 21). Our new marketing specialist Brian Williams and I discuss the report in a podcast (here). Price and production tables will be added early this upcoming week.

Cash Cattle:

Fed cattle were slow to move this week in the cash market. Most locations were too light to call a trend, but the reported five-area price was mostly steady with last week.  In Texas, Kansas, and Nebraska a few live sales traded at $126/cwt on Thursday and dressed sales in Nebraska were at $195/cwt on Thursday. Limited cash trade in Iowa and Minnesota were reported at $124-$125/cwt for live and $194-$195/cwt for dressed. In Oklahoma City feeder steers were $2-$3/cwt higher, while feeder heifers were steady to $2/cwt higher. Feeder steers and heifers in Mississippi auctions this week were mixed and slaughter cows and bulls were $1-$2/cwt lower.

Cattle Market Notes: Week Ending Sep 14, 2012


Cash Cattle:

Fed cattle were called $2-$3/cwt higher this week and the regional five-area live and dressed price was up $4.11/cwt and $5.93/cwt, respectively. Cattle in the Southern Plains traded at $127/cwt on Thursday. In Nebraska live and dressed sales were respectively at $126-$128 and $195/cwt on Thursday as well.  Western Cornbelt live cattle sold at $125/cwt and dressed were at $195/cwt. After a week off, steers – both feeders and calves – in Oklahoma City were steady to $2/cwt higher, while all heifers were steady with two weeks ago. Feeder steers in Mississippi auction this week were steady and feeder heifers were mixed. Cull cows and bulls were steady in Mississippi. Cattle Market Notes – Week Ending Sep 07, 2012


Cash Cattle:

Cash fed cattle were higher although trade was slow through Friday afternoon. Movement of cash cattle was too slow to call a trend in specific feeding regions, while the five-area live and dressed prices were, respectively, $2.27/cwt and $0.72/cwt higher at $121.80 and $189.48. No sale on Monday in Oklahoma City due the Labor Day holiday. In Mississippi markets, feeder steers were called at $1-$4/cwt higher and heifers were called $1-$5/cwt higher. Slaughter cows and bulls sold steady.

Cattle Market Notes – Week Ending Aug 31, 2012


Cash Cattle:

Cash fed cattle were higher. Live trade in Texas and Kansas was called at $123/cwt on moderate trade. Live trade was similar in Nebraska at $123/cwt on Thursday; dressed cattle were steady with last week at $190/cwt. Heavy feeder steers and heifers in Oklahoma City were steady to $2/cwt higher, while lighter weight feeders were #3-#5/cwt higher. In Mississippi markets, feeder steers and heifers were called steady. Slaughter cows were $1-$3/cwt higher and bulls were steady.
