Cattle Market Notes: Week Ending Oct 26, 2012


Cash Cattle:

Fed cattle prices continue to drift higher. This week prices improved another $2/cwt for live and about $4/cwt for dressed. In the Southern Plains live cattle sold at $127/cwt. In Nebraska, live and dressed cattle traded at $126-$128/cwt and $197-$198/cwt, respectively. Iowa and Minnesota cattle sold at $125-$126/cwt and $198/cwt, respectively, for live and dressed. In Oklahoma City, feeder steers and heifers were steady to $1-$3/cwt higher, steer calves were $2-$6/cwt higher and  heifer calves were steady. Cattle Market Notes: Week Ending Oct 19, 2012


Cash Cattle:

Fed cattle were higher again this week. Across the major feeding region most live sales were $2/cwt higher and dressed sales were $4/cwt higher. In the Southern Plains live cattle traded at $127-$127.50/cwt. In Nebraska, live and dressed cattle traded at $126-$128/cwt and $197/cwt, respectively. Iowa and Minnesota live cattle sold at $125/cwt and at $195-$198/cwt for dressed. In Oklahoma City, feeder steers and heifers under 800 pounds were steady to $2/cwt higher. Feeder steers and heifers were $1-$5/cwt higher in Mississippi auctions this week, while slaughter cows were $1-$2/cwt higher and bulls were $1-$3/cwt higher.

October Cattle on Feed


USDA released their monthly Cattle on Feed report this afternoon (Oct 19). Following last month’s decline in placements and cattle in feedlots, this month’s report shows the trend continuing. Cattle placed into feedlots during September with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger registered 2.004 million, down 18.8% from the same month in 2011. Continue reading “October Cattle on Feed”

Iowa and Minnesota live cattle sold at $122/cwt and at $192-$193/cwt for dressed. In Oklahoma City, feeder steers were steady to $1/cwt higher, feeder heifers were $1-$3/cwt higher, steer calves were $4-$12/cwt higher, and heifer calves were steady to $3/cw higher.
